WhatsApp Commerce in Kenya: How to Turn Conversations into Sales

WhatsApp reaches 90%+ of Kenyan smartphone users and has higher conversion rates than any other sales channel. Here's how to set up WhatsApp commerce with M-Pesa checkout.

Kenya has one of the highest WhatsApp penetration rates in Africa. Over 30 million Kenyans use WhatsApp — and for most, it's the primary way they communicate with businesses, discover new products, and place orders. If you run a business in Kenya and aren't actively selling on WhatsApp, you're ignoring your most powerful commerce channel.

Why WhatsApp is Kenya's most effective commerce channel

WhatsApp is different from other channels in a fundamental way: customers already trust it. They use it to talk to friends and family. When a business reaches them there, it feels personal — not like advertising.

The result: conversion rates on WhatsApp consistently outperform email, social media ads, and even website traffic for most Kenyan businesses.

    The numbers:

    • 90%+ of Kenyan smartphone users are active WhatsApp users
    • WhatsApp messages have an estimated 90–95% open rate vs 15–25% for email
    • Most Kenyan customers prefer WhatsApp for order queries, complaints, and follow-ups

    WhatsApp Business vs regular WhatsApp

If you're using your personal WhatsApp for business, the first step is a dedicated WhatsApp Business account. It's free and adds:

    • A Business Profile with your address, hours, website, and category
    • A Product Catalogue where customers browse your products without leaving WhatsApp
    • Quick Replies for common questions ("Do you deliver to Mombasa?" — one tap)
    • Labels to organise customers by stage: New Customer, Order Placed, Awaiting Payment, Delivered
    • Automated away messages for outside business hours

Setting up your WhatsApp Product Catalogue

WhatsApp Business supports up to 500 products. Customers tap the shopping bag icon in your profile, browse products, and share items directly in the chat.

    To set up:

    1. WhatsApp Business → Settings → Business Tools → Catalog
    2. Add each item: name, price, description, and a clear product photo
    3. Customers can browse and share items back to you in chat

The limitation: WhatsApp Catalogue doesn't process M-Pesa checkout automatically. Customers still manually send payment. This is where linking to your sell.ke store solves the problem entirely.

Turning WhatsApp into a full commerce channel with sell.ke

sell.ke generates a shareable product link for every item in your catalogue — a link that opens a checkout page with M-Pesa payment built in.

    The customer journey becomes:

    1. You share a product link on WhatsApp: "Check out this dress: sell.ke/amani-fashion/floral-dress"
    2. Customer taps the link, sees the product, and taps "Buy Now"
    3. Customer enters their phone number
    4. Customer receives an M-Pesa STK Push, enters their PIN, payment confirmed
    5. You receive the order and payment notification simultaneously
    6. Stock deducts automatically from your inventory

No "have you paid?", no manual M-Pesa statement checking, no double entry. The whole flow takes under 60 seconds.

WhatsApp Broadcast Lists: your most powerful free marketing tool

A Broadcast List lets you send a message to up to 256 contacts at once. The message appears as a direct personal message from you — not a group chat. This is the closest thing to email marketing but with 90%+ open rates.

How to build and use a broadcast list:

    1. Collect numbers with permission — When someone buys from you, ask if you can add them to your WhatsApp product updates. Most customers say yes.
    2. Organise by segment — "Regular buyers", "Wholesale customers", "Nairobi CBD customers"
    3. Send 2–3 times per week maximum — More feels spammy. Each message should offer value: a new product, a limited offer, or useful information.
    4. Always include a direct checkout link — Don't just describe the product. Link directly to the sell.ke product page so customers buy with one tap.

WhatsApp Status: free daily advertising to all your contacts

WhatsApp Status (equivalent to Instagram Stories) is viewed by all your saved contacts. Posting product photos, short videos, and offers is free advertising to your existing customer base.

    Best practices:

    • Post daily, ideally between 8–9am (people check their phones after waking)
    • Show real products with prices clearly visible
    • Add your sell.ke store link in the Status text so interested customers can buy directly
    • Mix product posts with behind-the-scenes content (packing orders, new arrivals) — this builds trust and authenticity

Taking delivery orders via WhatsApp without the chaos

If you offer delivery, WhatsApp is how most Kenyan customers expect to order. The challenge is handling 10–50 orders simultaneously without mistakes.

    sell.ke helps by:

    • Generating a unique order link per customer (share a specific cart to a specific person)
    • Automatically recording the order when the customer pays via M-Pesa checkout
    • Sending you a WhatsApp notification the moment payment is confirmed, with the customer's delivery address
    • Creating an order queue in your dashboard that your packing team can work through

The most common WhatsApp commerce mistakes

Responding too slowly — Customers who message you expect a reply within minutes during business hours, not hours later. WhatsApp Business's automated greeting helps, but you need active monitoring. A missed message is often a missed sale.

No payment link — Saying "send me M-Pesa to 0712 345 678" puts the burden on the customer, creates reconciliation problems, and feels informal. Always share a direct sell.ke checkout link.

Mixing personal and business on the same number — Get a dedicated business number. Customers don't want to see your personal messages, and you don't want customers to have your personal number.

No follow-up process — Most customers who ask about a product but don't buy immediately will buy later if you follow up once. Label them "Interested" and reach back out in 3–7 days with a new product or limited offer.
